The scientific-practical project “Development of complex regional models for forecasting salt and sand migration on the dried Aral Sea bed”, prepared by Professor of the Department of Geography and Natural Resources of Samarkand State University, Doctor of Geographical Sciences Vakhob Rafikov, was recognized as a promising one following the results of the competition held by the Agency for Innovative Development under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The project is aimed at ensuring environmental stability in the Aral Sea region, scientific assessment of desertification processes and formation of a regional forecasting system. It will be financed with 2 billion 687 million sums. Within the project it is planned to develop modern numerical models determining ecological changes occurring in the Aral Sea desert, in particular, the dynamics of salt and dust distribution by regions.
