Prospects for cooperation in nuclear medicine
Leading representatives of Russian nuclear medicine participated in the International Conference "Advanced Laser Technologies" (ALT26) held in Samarkand from September 28 to October 3, 2026. The delegation included two of the most prominent representatives of Russian nuclear medicine:
Irina Nikolayevna Zavestovskaya – Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Deputy Director for Nuclear Medicine of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute".
Sergey Mikhaylovich Deyev – Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Scientific Supervisor of the Scientific and Educational Center for Nuclear Medicine of the "Kurchatov Institute".
The visit of a large delegation from the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute", Russia's leading center in the field of nuclear research, initiated a new stage of cooperation with Samarkand State University (SamSU) named after Sharof Rashidov. The main goal of the cooperation is the development of nuclear technologies and medicine in Uzbekistan, and in Samarkand in particular.
One of the central events of the conference was the "Nuclear Medicine" section held on October 1-2, 2026. At the section, leading experts of the "Kurchatov Institute" presented the most advanced areas of industry development to the scientific community of Uzbekistan. Academician S.M. Deyev delivered a lecture on "Innovative technologies of targeted irradiation of deep-seated tumors", and I.N. Zavestovskaya lectured on "Promising technologies of nuclear medicine and radiology". Also, the Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan I.I. Sadikov delivered a lecture on the development of nuclear medicine in Uzbekistan, and Sh. Nishonov lectured on the production of radiopharmaceuticals in Uzbekistan.
Also, within the framework of the conference, the "Kurchatov Institute" and Samarkand State University jointly organized a scientific seminar (workshop). Scientists of the "Kurchatov Institute" and young researchers of the SamSU Institute of Nuclear Technologies presented their scientific research work. After each lecture, meaningful discussions and Q&A sessions were held, and young scientists received professional assessments and recommendations by presenting their results directly to the leading experts of the field. Russian experts, in turn, got acquainted with the scientific potential and laboratory base for nuclear physics formed in Samarkand.
After the seminar, the parties discussed issues of future cooperation. The Institute of Nuclear Technologies of SamSU put forward proposals to expand personnel training (master's and doctoral students) and joint research, as well as to organize short-term internships and advanced training courses for researchers and teaching staff. Representatives of the "Kurchatov Institute" accepted all the proposals and expressed their readiness to consider them at the institute's management level and start practical work in this regard soon.
Also, young scientists of SamSU who presented their research, Khasanov Sh.Kh., Khimmatov I.F., and Khazratov D.M., were invited to participate in the international scientific forum to be held at the "Kurchatov Institute" on November 9-13, 2026. Cooperation with the "Kurchatov Institute" is primarily an important stage in the training of national specialists based on the standards of the world's leading nuclear research center. Also, the partnership is of great importance in the development of the nuclear energy and nuclear medicine sectors in the country and in the training of highly qualified specialists in these fields. And of course, the agreements reached in Samarkand are the beginning of systematic work.
