Nobel Laureate Serge Haroche visited Samarkand State University. The distinguished guest was welcomed by the Rector of the University, Scientist of the Republic of Uzbekistan and member of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Rustam Khalmuradov, along with other officials.

Serge Haroche is a French physicist and one of the leading scientists in quantum optics and quantum physics. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his research on the interaction between light and matter in quantum systems.

Before the conference began, the guest wrote his heartfelt wishes in the “Honorary Guest Book” of the “Samarqandim” “My Samarkand” magazine. Following this, a meeting with Serge Haroche commenced in the university’s assembly hall. Rector Rustam Khalmuradov opened the meeting and provided a brief overview of the guest’s scientific career.

The world-renowned scientist in quantum optics and atomic physics, Serge Haroche, was born on September 11, 1944, in Casablanca, Morocco. His family moved to France in 1956. He studied at the University of Paris and defended his doctoral dissertation in physics at Paris VI University in 1971.

In collaboration with American scientist David J. Wineland, he made a significant contribution to the creation of innovative experimental methods that allow for the measurement and control of individual quantum systems.

Serge Haroche has worked at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and has conducted research at Stanford, Harvard, and Yale Universities. Since 2001, he has served as a Professor of Quantum Physics at the Collège de France.

During the event, Serge Haroche was conferred the title of Honorary Professor of Samarkand State University. Rector Rustam Khalmuradov solemnly presented him with the certificate. In accordance with national traditions, the guest was draped in a traditional embroidered robe (chapan) and presented with commemorative gifts.

In his speech, Serge Haroche spoke about his scientific activities, research, current challenges, and the future of quantum physics. He specifically emphasized the role and importance of achievements in quantum optics and atomic physics in the development of modern technologies, encouraging young researchers to pursue active exploration in this field.

At the end of the event, Rector Rustam Khalmuradov thanked the guest on behalf of the audience for the engaging lecture and presented him with the “Samarqandim” – “My Samarkand” magazine and souvenir photographs.
