The phrase refers to the German philosopher and poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832). Johann Peter Eckermann, the philosopher's secretary, recalls that the great philosopher repeated the above phrase, which he had authored, when he was tired of conversations in certain scientific circles that he did not like.
