History of the Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work at Samarkand State University named after Sharof Rashidov was established in 2025 based on Order No. 371-ij of the University Council on the basis of the Department of Sociology and Social Work. The department currently employs 8 teachers, including 1 professor, 4 associate professors, and 2 assistants. Among them are 1 Doctor of Sciences and 1 Candidate of Sciences.

Due to the increasing attention to training specialists in social work and developing the social sphere, student admission to this field began in 2005 at the Faculty of History of Samarkand State University. The first graduates in this specialty completed their studies in 2009.

It is known that social work is a relatively young academic discipline in the national scientific system. Therefore, certain challenges exist in teaching this subject. These include the need to develop textbooks and teaching materials, prepare curricula, publish scientific articles, and inform students about innovations in the field, all of which require extensive research activities.

For this purpose, in 2015, Professor M. Ganieva of the National University of Uzbekistan, Associate Professor N. Latipova, Head of the Department Associate Professor I. Negmatov, and Associate Professor M. B. Sherov co-authored the textbook “Ethics of Social Work.” This textbook won 2nd place in the “Best Textbook of the Year” competition organized by the Ministry of Higher Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In addition, Associate Professor M. B. Sherov published teaching manuals titled “Legal Foundations of Social Work” and “Foreign Experience in Social Work.”

Since January 2019, Associate Professor I. Negmatov has been serving as the head of the department. Under his leadership, 2 DSc and 4 PhD dissertations have been defended, 10 textbooks, more than 20 teaching manuals, 8 monographs, and over 100 scientific and popular articles have been published.

Leading faculty members of the department — I. Negmatov, M. N. Normamatova, M. B. Sherov, D. Kh. Bakhrieva, M. S. Abbasova, M. U. Tangirova, and D. Toshpolatov — are actively engaged in research work with talented students.

The department hosts a scientific club called “Creators of the Social Sphere,” led by Associate Professor M. S. Abbasova. On March 18, in celebration of World Social Work Day, an intellectual game “Zakovat” was organized among students, and the winners were awarded.

Additionally, based on the letter of the National Agency for Social Protection under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated March 11, 2026 (No. 01/27/2145), students participated in the “Zakovat” intellectual game held on April 2–3 in Tashkent. The event was organized under the leadership of Associate Professor M. B. Sherov.

Furthermore, students actively participate with scientific articles and theses in more than 10 national scientific journals and conferences.
