On February 15th, Fulbright English Teaching Assistant and ETA Program Coordinator Christopher Cowan presented the English Philology and International Education Programs Faculties at Samarqand State University with new materials from the United States.

Among the materials presented to the University are biographies of famous Americans including Steve Jobs, Michelle Obama, Crazy Horse, and Frederick Douglass, famous classic works of American literature including The Great Gatsby, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and To Kill a Mockingbird,  and materials for learning about American history and culture, including copies of U.S. historical documents such as the Constitution, an anthology of Native American folklore and traditions, and the Smithsonian’s official Encyclopedia of American History.

Materials also include reference and teaching materials for use by English teachers during courses, and materials intended for use during speaking clubs, including games such as “Scrabble,” and “Uno.”

“I am very excited to be here at Samarqand State University, and I look forward to sharing these resources with students and colleagues during my time here,” Christopher said. In addition to teaching classes alongside faculty colleagues, Christopher also hosts speaking clubs four times every week where participants can practice their speaking skills and learn about American culture.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program places Americans in classrooms in over 80 countries, where they assist local English teachers and serve as cultural ambassadors for the United States. In Uzbekistan, ETAs serve in secondary schools, universities, and special institutes throughout the country.
