Aleksandr Strokanov

Director of the Institute of Humanities at Vermont State University, Professor.

He teaches courses on Introduction to World History, Western Civilization, European and Asian History. Aleksandr Strokanov is the author of more than 12 textbooks, over 70 scholarly articles, and a participant in several international grant projects.

Research interests: History and politics of Central Asia, including Uzbekistan.

Graduated from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor. She is the leader and participant of several international and fundamental projects.

Xurramova Saodat Xabibovna

Since 1980, she has been working at the Department of Philosophy at Samarkand State University (SamDU), and since 2004, she has been serving as an associate professor at the Regional Training and Retraining Center of SamDU. Saodat Xurramova is a Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor, and has been working at the Department of History of Uzbekistan at SamDU since 2024.

In 1991, she successfully defended her candidate dissertation on the topic “Developing Interest in Social Knowledge among High School Students.”

Michael Shenkar

Associate Professor of Pre-Islamic Iranian Studies. His research focuses on the civilizations and cultures of the pre-Islamic Iranian world, studied through material remains and visual representations. His academic interests include the archaeology, art, and religions of pre-Islamic Iran and Central Asia, with a particular focus on Zoroastrianism (especially religious iconography), the culture of Eurasian nomads, Sogdian civilization, and the history of the Silk Roads.

Professor Shenkar is currently co-director (together with Dr. Sharof Qurbonov, Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan) of the excavations at Sanjar-Shah, a city in northern Sogdiana dating from the 5th–9th centuries CE.

His scholarly contributions include “Intangible Spirits and Carved Images. The Iconography of the Gods in Pre-Islamic Iran” (Boston–Leiden, 2014), “The Story of Faramarz in the Panjikent Murals” (2014), “Rethinking Sasanian Iconoclasm” (2015), “The Great Iranian Divide: Between the Aniconic West and the Anthropomorphic East” (2017), and “The Origins of the Sogdian Civic Communities (nāf)” (2020).

Professor Shenkar has been awarded several prestigious honors, including the Alon Fellowship for Young Lecturers (Council for Higher Education, Israel), the Prix de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (Institut de France, Paris), the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship (German Archaeological Institute, Berlin), and the Max Shlomjuk Prize for Best Doctoral Dissertation (Hebrew University of Jerusalem).

He teaches courses on Zoroastrianism, civilizations and cultures of pre-Islamic Iran and Central Asia, the material culture of the Sasanian Empire, the Sogdian civilization, and the history of the Silk Roads.

Sadullah Gülten

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor. Since 2025, he has been working at the  Faculty of History, Samarkand State University named after Sharof Rashidov. He received the title of Associate Professor in 2014 and Professor in 2019. In 2023, he began working at the Department of Alevi-Bektashi Culture at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University.

Professor Gülten is also the Director of the Research Center for Turkish Culture and Hacı Bektash Veli Studies. He has written scholarly articles on topics such as “Bozok Turkmens,” “Cracks from Ancestors to Homeland,” “Heterodox Dervishes and Alevis,” “The Ancestors of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” and “History of the Turks.”

He is the author of several books, including “Ali,” “Qizilbash between the Ottomans and Safavids,” “From Bozok to Yozgat: Villages and Peasants (1529–1844),” “Three, Seven, Forty: Sultans of the Spiritual World,” and “From the Huns to the Foundation of the Republic of Turkey” (editor).

 

About the Department of History of Uzbekistan

The Department of History of Uzbekistan at Samarkand State University was founded in 1929-1937 under the name of the Department of History of Central Asia in the Higher Pedagogical Institute (1927-1930) of the Higher Pedagogical Academy (1930-1933) of Uzbek State University. In 1937-1941 it continued its activity under the name of department of history of the people of Uzbekistan. After restoration of the UzSU in 1944 it functioned as chair of history of Central Asia and foreign east countries, in 1959-1994 again under the name of history of the people of Uzbekistan, and in 1994-2005 years chair of history of Fatherland. Since 2005 the interdepartmental chair of the history of Uzbekistan joined the chair of the history of Fatherland and works under its current name.

 

 

To date, the department employs 2 doctors of sciences, professors, 2 doctors of sciences and 6 candidates of sciences, associate professors, 5 candidates of sciences and 3 assistants.

Members of the department maintain close ties with scientists from NUUz, Far State University, AnSU, TashP State University, Gul State University, Buch State University, Kar State University, Ter State University, Navoi and Djizak universities and other higher educational institutions of the republic, Institute of History and Institute of Archaeology SAUz, Oxford University in England, Harvard University in the USA, Berlin University and Humboldt University in Germany, Vienna University (Austria), Lomonosov Moscow State University and other foreign specialists. Professor Alexander Morrison of Oxford University and Professor Alexander Kadyrbaev of Moscow State University are currently working in the department.

Since 2021, under the department works scientific center "History of the Uzbek people and its statehood", as well as student scientific circle "Moziydan sado". Talented students of the department compete in various national competitions. For example, they took part in the competition "Think Tests" on the study of the new history of Uzbekistan with the team "Heirs of Ulugbek" and took 1st place in 2012 and 3rd place in 2013. Among the graduates of the department there are winners of the Presidential Scholarship, scholarships named after famous figures, winners of national Olympiads.

By the present time teachers of the department have created more than 40 textbooks, manuals, texts of lectures, educational and methodical manuals, collections and instructions, and more than 20 monographs, about 50 scientific articles, published a popular brochure, more than 30 scientific collections, about 900 scientific articles and more than 200 popular science articles.

Currently, the department conducts research on "History of statehood in the territory of Uzbekistan: traditions and transformation processes (2021-2025)".
