The Department of Botany is one of the historical and classical departments operating since the founding of the Uzbek State University (now Samarkand State University) in 1927.
The Department of Botany conducts its activities in the field of technology of cultivation and introduction of medicinal plants, floristry, and resource science.
A huge contribution to the training of qualified personnel, prominent scientists on the basis of the scientific strategy of the department was made by Acad. K.Z. Zakirov, Acad. J.K. Saidov, prof. N.A. Merkulovich, prof. M.G. Popov, prof. E.G. Proskoryakov, prof. J.T. Kabulov, prof. M.I. Ikramov and N.A. Amirkhanov.
Currently, the department employs 11 teachers. 1 of them is Doctor of Science, Professor, 9 Candidates of Science, Associate Professors.
The department has a greenhouse built in 1970-1971. Where is a collection of 250 different types of tropical and subtropical ornamental plants. Also in the greenhouse there is a "Floriculture" club, where students conduct scientific research.
Also, the department has a gold fund of the Herbarium collection, which in terms of the size and significance of this herbarium collection is the second in the republic after the herbarium fund of the Institute of Botany at the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. The herbarium is associated with the history of the department, and since the 1900s, they have been collected mainly by scientists and teachers of the department on the territory of the Zarafshan Valley and Central Asia. Currently, the development of digital electronic catalogs based on herbarium data is underway.
From 1927 to 2020, 2 academicians, 16 doctors of sciences, 38 candidates of sciences were graduated at the Department of Botany. Scientists of the department created 8 textbooks, 42 monographs, more than 100 teaching aids.
