Along with the cities of the West and the East, such as Athens, Rome, Paris, Baghdad, Damascus, the name of Samarkand is revered and mentioned in various sources. The role of Samarkand in the history of universal cultural development is unique, and in 2001 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as "Samarkand - the crossroads of cultures." On August 25, 2007, the 2750th anniversary of the city of Samarkand was celebrated.

Samarkand's membership in the World Federation of Tourist Cities (WTCF) in 2019 indicates that it will become a world tourism center in the future. Samarkand is one of the 50 most visited cities in the world, and only Samarkand deserves this list.

Nowadays, international interest in the history, culture and modern life of this ancient city is growing year by year. The issues of historical and cultural development of Samarkand are being studied as special projects in a number of leading scientific centers of the world, such as UNESCO MOTHI, Oxford, Sarbonna, Bologna, Vienna, the University of Ottawa and the institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. From this point of view, the establishment of the department of "History of Samarkand civilization" at Samarkand State University, located in this city, opened a new page in Samarkand studies.

The study of the history of Samarkand allows to reveal the features of the city's development, and on the basis of the accumulated experience to draw the necessary conclusions that are useful for the current and future stages of socio-economic development of the city. The study of each historical period of Samarkand is of great scientific and practical importance.

The purpose of the department is to provide a comprehensive and objective coverage of the history of Samarkand, the study of sources in the form of manuscripts and lithographs that have not been included in scientific circulation. It is also planned to create a catalog of all research and literature on the history of Samarkand conducted in foreign research centers. One of the goals of the department is to study the formation and development of the national statehood of Uzbekistan, to strengthen the mechanisms of integration with science, education and other social spheres, and to form in-depth knowledge of the history of Samarkand.

Tasks of the department of history of Samarkand civilization:

 - The collection of sources and literature on the history of Samarkand, primarily by members of the department;

 - Working with historical sources, comprehensive study of historical and cultural heritage, promotion of the invaluable contribution of great scientists and thinkers to the development of world science and civilization, our compatriots, first of all, the young generation of our people to radically increase the effectiveness of work aimed at educating people in the spirit of respect for their heritage, love and devotion to our motherland;

 - Further study of manuscripts and lithographs in the library of Samarkand State University, based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated May 24, 2017 "On measures to further improve the system of preservation, study and promotion of ancient written sources" to reach;

- To study the life and work of Samarkand scientists in the Middle Ages, the role and status of Samarkand in the first and second periods of the Eastern Renaissance;

- Annotated index of various types of sources on all periods of Samarkand's history, including archeological, numismatic, epigraphic, ethnographic, historical chronicles, memoirs, geographical, agiographic, oral history, folk epics, religious and legal sources preparation;

- To bring the work of popularization and commercialization of scientific results to the level of modern requirements, to create a new and effective system of promotion of ancient, rich and unique historical heritage at the national and foreign levels on the basis of a completely new system of training historians, closely linked with scientific institutions ;

 - Organization of fundamental, applied and innovative research on the history of Samarkand, the implementation of their results in practice, cooperation with foreign research organizations and international foundations, the systematic study of the history of Samarkand in close connection with global and regional processes. study;

- Research and development on the history of Samarkand, the development and introduction of modern educational technologies in the educational process, improving the content and methods of teaching, the organization of the educational process based on questions and questionnaires of students;

- Organization of educational work with the expansion of students 'worldviews, regular analysis of students' research and creative work in the field of studying the history of Samarkand, participation in science Olympiads and scientific conferences, more independent work;

- O‘qitish sifatining doimiy yaxshilanishini ta’minlash, talabalar tomonidan fanlardan an’anaviy ta’limdan tashqari o‘zlashtirish uchun virtual ta’lim muhitini ta’minlashga harakat qilish, yoshlarning intellektual, ta’lim va tadqiqot darajasini oshirish, talabalarning shaxsiy, ma’naviy va axloqiy salohiyatini rivojlantirish;

- Development of a map of historical places of Samarkand in order to get an idea of ​​the great historical figures and events, preparation of popular scientific brochures and manuals on the historical place, person and thing; - Development of a procedure for the creation and conduct of research on the history of Samarkand; - Internet portal "Samarkand civilization" in cooperation with relevant agencies in order to promote Uzbekistan in the world through the organization of regular conferences "Samarkand readings", highlighting the role of Samarkand in world civilization in various areas of history (web- It is planned to create a series of programs on the history of Samarkand in cooperation with the regional television and radio company and the TV channel History of Uzbekistan; - In order to further study the architectural and historical monuments of Samarkand, to increase the flow of domestic and foreign tourism in the major objects of material and cultural heritage in Samarkand, to develop a tour map of the region in close cooperation with tour companies, taking into account the country's tourism potential. creation of qualified guides and various materials covering the history of the city; - To fulfill the following tasks specified in the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated September 30, 2019 on additional measures for the effective use and development of tourism potential of Samarkand region, students of higher education institutions In order to implement the action plan for the development of tourism, aimed at combining curricula on history and culture with visits to tourism facilities in Samarkand region, part of the lessons will be held in historical places, which are scientific laboratories; - In cooperation with the State Committee for Tourism Development, information albums and catalogs, guides, including brief information on the history, ethnography, gastronomy, national costumes, cultural heritage sites and historical monuments of Samarkand. development of location maps, handouts and promotional materials; - To study the history and culture of the nations and diasporas living in Samarkand, taking into account the fact that Samarkand has always been a multi-ethnic region, as well as modern interethnic tolerance; - Study of the new history of Samarkand, analysis of problems and achievements; - To promote the development of Uzbekistan, world history and modern social sciences and humanities on the basis of the development of interdisciplinary areas of education and research of the department. At present, the newly established department has two PhDs in history SI Muhiddinov and OJ Iriskulov, one senior teacher M. Buzrukov and two teachers MB Yakubova and MG Khasanov.

Associate Professor AM Malikov, a senior researcher at the Palazko Olomous University in the Czech Republic, and IT Daurbekova, a junior researcher at the Department of Manuscripts and Museums of the Imam Bukhari International Research Center, also work on a part-time basis. Professors and teachers of the department serve in all faculties of the university, give lectures on the history of Samarkand civilization and hold seminars on the historical monuments of our city.

 The Faculty of History has developed 11 specialties and special courses for students majoring in "History of Samarkand." An e-textbook, textbook, text of lectures and manuals are being created for students. Leading experts from the republic and abroad are involved in the lecture. Professors and teachers of the department provide methodological assistance in the history of Samarkand to the regions, the city of Samarkand, higher and secondary special educational institutions, general secondary schools.
