About the Department of Botany
The Department of Botany is one of the historical classical departments and has been operating since the establishment in 1927 of the State University of Uzbekistan (now Samarkand State University). The Department of Botany conducts scientific research in the field of floristry, raw science, cultivation technology and the introduction of medicinal plants. Acad. K. Zakirov, acad. Zh. Saidov, prof. N. Merkulovich, prof. M. Popov, prof. Yu. Proskoryakov, prof. Zh. Kobulov, prof. M. Ikromov, N. Amirkhanov, O. Musinova, H. Normurodov and other scientists made a huge contribution to the creation of the scientific strategy of the department. Currently, 11 professors and teachers work at the Department of Botany. Among them, 1 Doctor of Sciences-Professor, 9 Candidates of Sciences, Associate Professors and Senior Lecturers. The department has a greenhouse, built in 1970-1971. It has a collection of 250 different types of tropical and subtropical ornamental plants. Also in the greenhouse there is a circle "Gulchilik", where students conduct scientific research. In 2022, the greenhouse was reconstructed. The department also has a gold fund of the herbarium collection. This collection of herbariums ranks second in our republic in terms of quantity and significance after the herbarium fund of the Institute of Botany under the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan. |

Herbariums are connected with the history of the department and have been collected by scientists and teachers of the department since the 1900s, mainly from the Zeravshan Valley and Central Asia. Currently, work is underway to create a digital electronic catalog of herbarium data in an information computer database. For 1927-2020, 2 academicians, 16 doctors of sciences, 42 candidates of sciences were trained at the department of botany. The scientists of the department created 12 textbooks, 42 monographs, more than 100 teaching aids. From 2017 to 2022, much attention was paid to the collection of the historical herbarium. A separate building has been created for this rare treasure, which is stored in several classrooms of the Faculty of Biology. It was named "Herbarium-Botanical Research Laboratory" SamSU. In addition, the laboratories "Palinology", "Mycology", "Briology and Lichenology" were created at the laboratory. These laboratories are distinguished by the fact that they were created for the first time in the Republic of Uzbekistan and are of interest to many foreign scientists. In 2021, the SamSU herbarium was included in the list of 3100 on the platform of international herbariums established in the United States as a historical rarity, and was named "Herba SAMDU". Currently, work is underway to equip herbarium collections with a new type of equipment. |
